CranioSacral Therapy - What is it and how does it work?
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on modality that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve overall health. CST is often used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and it's effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
Few structures have as much influence over the body's ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that make up the central nervous system. The central nervous system is heavily influenced by the craniosacral system - the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord.
Every day the body endures stresses and strains that it must expend energy to compensate for. Unfortunately, these changes often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system. These distortions can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord, resulting in restrictions, potentially creating a barrier to optimal function of the nervous system, as well as any other system it interacts with.
Fortunately, such restrictions can be detected and corrected using simple methods of touch. With a light touch, Amy uses her hands to evaluate the craniosacral system by gently feeling various locations of the body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. Soft-touch techniques are then used to release restrictions in any tissues influencing the craniosacral system.
By regulating the environment around the brain and spinal cord and enhancing the body's ability to self-correct, CranioSacral Therapy is able to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment.
Even when light-touch CranioSacral Therapy relieves tensions in the body tissues after an accident or injury, it’s sometimes necessary to release the trapped emotional energy to fully discharge the trauma and restore the body to good health. In those cases, it's not uncommon to spontaneously experience a SomatoEmotional Release® during the CranioSacral Therapy session. SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is based on university research conducted in the 1970s by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger and biophysicist Zvi Karni. Their clinical studies led to the discovery that the body frequently retains the emotional imprint of physical trauma, especially of intense feelings. These emotional imprints often get deposited in the body, creating areas called “energy cysts.” The body can adapt to energy cysts – those walled-off areas of emotion. But as we take on more stress from the daily bumps and bruises of life, the body can reach a tipping point and lose its ability to accommodate for the energy cysts. That’s when uncomfortable symptoms and dysfunctions can become difficult to suppress or ignore.
Amy provides a safe environment for clients to get in touch with these long-held emotions – even silently. Sometimes that’s all it takes to allow them to move out of the body. Other times Amy may ask permission to gently dialogue in a way that helps clients release the emotional energy from tissues. She may also offer simple guided-visualization exercises that allow the release of emotions without the need to analyze or understand them. With the release of negative emotions, clients often feel lighter, joyful, and more relaxed.
